Referendum outcome: Iceland not to resume accession negotiations with the European Union

In a referendum, held on 29 August 2026, the people of Iceland voted against resuming accession negotiations with the European Union.

Turnout in the referendum was high, 82,6% of registered voters participated, 225.031 out of the 272.591 people on the voter register.

• 52,8% voted NO while
• 47,2% voted yes.

The referendum was held on the basis of the platform of the current Government, from 21 December 2024, to seek the guidance of the people on a question that has for many years been debated in Iceland. Accordingly, the Government will not resume membership negotiations with the EU.
