Iceland‘s membership in the Human Rights Council Ministry for Foreign Affairs Iceland is a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2025 to 2027. Equal Pay Certification

Equal Pay Certification Ministry of Justice Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs The purpose of the obligatory equal pay certification is to enforce the current legislation prohibiting discriminatory practices based on gender and requiring that women and men shall be paid equal wages and enjoy equal terms of employment for the same jobs or jobs of equal value. Companies and institutions employing 25 or more workers, on annual basis, will be required to obtain equal pay certification of their equal pay system and the implementation thereof. In accordance to the legislation, certification shall meet the requirements of the Standard ÍST 85, Equal Wage Management System – Requirements and guidance (normally called The Equal Pay Standard)

This is important to promote active participation by most people in the labour market, but participation is considered one of the most important ways to prevent social isolation and poverty

The dire situation of women and girls in Afghanistan was discussed at a conference held at the initiative of Iceland at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris today on the occasion of International Women's Day. A video address from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, was delivered at the beginning of the conference where the Minister emphasized that the international community must not forget the human rights of Afghan women and girls.

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution that addresses the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran put forward by a core group led by Iceland. The resolution renews the mandate of the Special Rapporteur to monitor and report regularly on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition, it extends for one year the mandate of the independent international fact-finding mission (FFM) which collects, analyses and preserves evidence on serious human rights violations following the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini and the subsequent nationwide protests in the autumn of 2022.

Iceland supports human rights in Malawi

Representatives of the Embassy of Iceland in Malawi, together with representatives of the Embassy of Norway and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), signed an agreement on Friday to support institutions and organizations that protect human rights in the country. Earlier last week work on a new administrative building in the Mangochi district was officially launched. The project is significant as it is financed jointly by the Icelandic and Malawian governments.

Female foreign ministers publish joint statement on women's rights in Iran

Sixteen female foreign ministers met online on 20th October to discuss the serious human rights violations taking place in Iran, not least against women and children. Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Iceland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the meeting which was hosted by Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. After the meeting the Foreign Ministers released a joint statement in which they condemn the Iranian government's brutal violence against demonstrators, call for an independent investigation and voice their support for the women of Iran.
