Minister puts emphasis on safeguarding human rights and international system in address to UN Human Rights Council

Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir today delivered her address to the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. In her speech, Foreign Minister Gunnarsdóttir emphasized the need to safeguard the United Nations and the international system established after World War II. That the values that the world's nations agreed to respect were being severely undermined, and she particularly criticized Russia's illegal, all-out invasion of Ukraine, on the day when leaders have gathered in Kiev to express support for Ukraine exactly three years after the invasion began.

Nordic statement on the draft legal bills in the Knesset related to UNRWA

The Nordic countries are deeply concerned by the recent introduction of draft legal bills in the Knesset that, if adopted, would prevent the UNRWA from continuing its operations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza. Effectively, UNRWA would no longer be able to exercise its core tasks as stipulated by UN General Assembly Resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949, that is “to carry out […] direct relief and works programmes” for the millions of Palestine refugees living in these areas. It is from this and subsequent UN resolutions that UNRWA’s mandate is derived, and as its parent organ, it is only the General Assembly that can define the UNRWA mandate.

The Nordic countries are greatly concerned by the withholding of Palestinian clearance revenues which is exacerbating the strenuous fiscal situation of the Palestinian Authority. The EU appreciates the determined efforts by the US, Egypt and Qatar in facilitating negotiations to bring an end to the war between Israel and Hamas, while ensuring Israel’s security, to which the EU remains fully committed. Nordic statement on the opening of the port of Ashdod and the Erez crossing 12 April 2024

The Nordic countries welcome the Israeli government’s announcement that life-saving humanitarian assistance to Gaza can be received in the port of Ashdod, that the Erez crossing will be reopened to facilitate entry to north Gaza, and that humanitarian assistance from Jordan entering through Kerem Shalom crossing in the south will be increased.

UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution that addresses the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran put forward by a core group led by Iceland. The resolution renews the mandate of the Special Rapporteur to monitor and report regularly on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition, it extends for one year the mandate of the independent international fact-finding mission (FFM) which collects, analyses and preserves evidence on serious human rights violations following the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini and the subsequent nationwide protests in the autumn of 2022.
