Iceland’s Presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers 2023

Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir has presented the programme for the Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers for 2023. The Prime Minister presented the one-year Presidency programme to the Session of the Nordic Council that took place in Helsinki this week. Iceland will take over the Presidency from Norway on 1 January 2023.

Female foreign ministers publish joint statement on women's rights in Iran

Sixteen female foreign ministers met online on 20th October to discuss the serious human rights violations taking place in Iran, not least against women and children. Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Iceland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the meeting which was hosted by Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. After the meeting the Foreign Ministers released a joint statement in which they condemn the Iranian government's brutal violence against demonstrators, call for an independent investigation and voice their support for the women of Iran.

It should come as a no surprise that Nordic countries are strong supporters of the rule of law, both at national and international levels. Democracy and human rights are central elements of the Rule of law, which is a principle of governance in which all persons, institutions and entities, including the State itself, are accountable to the same laws that are equally enforced and independently adjudicated
