Iceland´s resolution on the situation in the Philippines approved in the UN Human Rights Council

The UN Human Rights Council today passed a resolution, tabled by Iceland, on the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines. The resolution expresses concern over allegations of human rights violations in the Philippines, particularly those involving extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests and detention, as well as intimidation and persecution of human rights defenders and others.

The violence in the Kasaï-regions in 2016-2017 particularly affected children, and many women were subjected to sexual violence – often repeatedly. Given the HRC’s call for accountability, it is alarming that none of these crimes have been taken to court and that the few ongoing investigations do not reflect the full range of committed crimes

We also welcome the role of Edward Wagani in engaging men and boys, which Iceland attaches great importance to
