Consumer Affairs

Consumer Affairs Ministry of Industries Ministry of Justice Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate Consumer affairs are a concern in many areas of public administration. The traditional definition of a consumer is an individual who purchases goods or services, with the purchase not comprising part of a commercial activity, from a seller who sells the goods or services on a commercial basis. Consumer affairs include all issues which are covered by this definition and, as a result, they are part of the tasks of all state agencies directly or indirectly responsible for public supervision of business and commercial activities

Lotteries Ministry of Justice Lotteries can only be operated by permission of a District Commissioner, and for the purpose of raising funds for public benefit in Iceland. Special rules apply to lotteries with cash prizes, which cannot be operated without a special statutory authorisation. This applies as well to internet lotteries if they offer cash rewards and to gambling

Chemicals Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate It is important to ensure that the use of chemicals and chemical products does not threaten human or animal health or the environment, and that consumers receive satisfactory information on chemicals and substances. It is urgent to prevent or restrict, as far as possible, the release of chemicals that are environmental and health hazards, as well as the illegal marketing of substances. Icelandic legislation on chemicals is based on Nordic and European Union legislation on chemicals and chemical substances, as the latter applies in Iceland under the Agreement on a European Economic Area
