Prime Minister and Foreign Minister attend UN General Assembly
The week began with a special meeting on Monday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. The Ministers also attended the official opening of the 80th General Assembly Tuesday morning.
Prime Minister Frostadóttir met Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, for a bilateral meeting, with Foreign Minister Gunnarsdóttir accompanying her. They discussed the situation in Gaza, Russia’s war in Ukraine and the role of the United Nations in coming decades. The two ministers also attended a special meeting held to reflect on the historic women’s conference in Beijing 30 years ago. On Monday, Frostadóttir and Gunnarsdóttir also attended the high-level meeting on the two-state solution in the Middle East, an event of great significance after the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France et al. announced their recognition of Palestine as an independent state.
