Iceland's main interests and negotiating objectives are addressed in Chapter VI of the majority opinion of the Foreign Affairs Committee to the motion for parliamentary resolution that formed the basis of the Althing's decision on 28 May 2026 to hold the referendum on 29 August 2026.
The chapter covers, among other things, general matters, the EEA Agreement, energy and natural resources, fisheries, agriculture and regional development, environment and climate, employment and industry, public services and social affairs, currency matters, security and defence, taxation and customs, and EU finances and budgetary matters.
Should voters decide on 29 August to resume accession negotiations with the EU, the government would update its negotiating objectives through a broad domestic consultation, which would then be submitted to the Althing in a special report.
