Accession negotiations are formal negotiations between a candidate country and the Member States of the European Union, during which the candidate country's legislation is examined and compared with EU legislation across 35 defined policy areas, chapter by chapter. During the negotiations, the candidate country may present its negotiating position and seek specific arrangements or derogations before an accession treaty is put to voters in a second referendum.
