Embassy Information

The role of the Embassy is to manage Iceland’s development cooperation in Malawi, as well as safeguarding Iceland’s interests in foreign affairs and trade, and provide services to Icelanders in the region.

The Embassy was established in 2004. However, formal relations and cooperation between Iceland and Malawi date back to 1989 when the first development cooperation agreement between the two countries signed. In 2024, Iceland and Malawi celebrated 35 years of partnership.

Iceland’s development cooperation in Malawi is based on close collaboration with the country’s government, particularly with district authorities in Iceland’s partner districts, Mangochi and Nkhotakota. Additionally, Iceland works with United Nations agencies, the World Bank, and both local and international non-governmental organizations.
