Statement by Iceland (no 7 of 96)

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of Bulgaria and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

1. Amend legislation to criminalize all forms of gender-based violence and expedite ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
2. Criminalize marital rape and adopt a consent-based definition of rape that applies to all persons without discrimination.
3. Ensure explicit protection against hate crimes and discrimination based on SOGIESC.
4. Amend the Family Code to recognize same-sex parental rights and allow adoption by same-sex couples.
5. Introduce a transparent administrative self-identification process for legal gender recognition free from intrusive requirements.
6. Amend education legislation to remove discriminatory provisions targeting persons of diverse SOGIESC .
